Join us for a morning of exploration of our Methodist Heritage… perfect for Confirmation Classes, Young Adults, New Members, or just-plain-curious folk. You won’t want to miss this popular way to experience your denomination’s beginnings, and meet other Methodists that are carrying the faith into the future.

Agenda

The very full morning (10:30 to 12:30) consists of an overview of Methodist history for all in the sanctuary, followed by some activities to let the students explore history in different ways (adults will have a fun time with a musician in the Sanctuary while the students explore). Your group will have the opportunity to join with youth from other churches, and we encourage you to plan some review time following the event to gather everyone’s impressions of the day. If you are taking advantage of other activities in Philadelphia that day, please leave sufficient transition time after the 12:30 closing to travel to your next location. We are only blocks from the Constitution Center, the Visitor’s Center, and Independence Hall.

We promise you a unique and enjoyable day, and we have a few hints to help you make the most of your time here:

  1. When you arrive, your group should go directly to their seats in the sanctuary while you check with the usher to pick up your group’s packet. There are designated rows to sit in to get the best view of the proceedings.
  2. Encourage your students to follow the leaders of the different activities as they are requested… what may seem mysterious at first will be clear in the end! To have a successful experience, it is important that we have everyone’s cooperation and move in an orderly fashion from one activity to another.
  3. Following the history overview in the sanctuary, your group will be divided into 3 experiential parts: 1 group will be discovering the relations of St. George’s to the AME churches (a timely topic in this unique election year), the second group will be “history detectives” in the museum, solving a puzzle and learning a little Wesley theology, and the third will be working with a music director to learn a hymn the old-fashioned way (no i-Pod!). [note: because of the wealth of material, we have found this approach to work the best … please plan time after your visit for your participants to share their experiences with each other.]
  4. We will reconvene in the Sanctuary for the closing ceremony.

Our Request from You

Because we have hired musicians and actors to help us give you a meaningful experience, we ask that each group consider a donation of at least $75 for up to 20 students, and $100 for larger groups to help us cover the program development. You may bring the check that day, or send it ahead of time to the address below.

Bonus … snacks, souvenirs, extended tour time and facts galore

A typical Philly snack will be provided following the event. There is also a gift shop with Methodist memorabilia, including a great T-shirt with the “Time Traveler” logo on it for $10. The museum will remain open following the event, and guides will be available to tell you about our many treasures. You will want to encourage your students to see the Wesley chalice and the Asbury Bible.

Parking Info

We will start promptly at 10:30 in the Sanctuary, so please allow time for parking, etc. There is very limited free parking in the lot belonging to Camitta Bros. on the NW corner of 4th and Vine (be sure not to park in any of the other private lots). There are also public parking lots near by. You can get location and pricing info at www.philapark.org

Lunch

For lunch, there is a food court nearby in the Bourse (www.bourse-pa.com). They have a box lunch and voucher program for groups: please call (215) 625-0300 ext. 16 for details, or go to their website.

Fun in the city

You will have the afternoon to explore the many attractions of historic Philadelphia, which are detailed at www.independencevisitorcenter.com. One of the neat nearby activities is a miniature golf game with tiny replicas of the historic buildings (Franklin Square Miniature Golf, 6th & Race Streets, Philadelphia, 215-629-4026), but don’t miss the full-size attractions, too!

The church building will be open until 5 pm that day, so you can use it as a base for your activities and regroup here as needed. If you have any questions, please call.
